Cosplay begins with imagination. A sketch becomes a character; a costume helps bring a story to life. It’s no surprise that AI has become part of the conversation in a community built around art, fantasy and creativity. It’s also no surprise that people feel differently about it. Some are excited by what AI can do. Others worry about what it means for artists, makers and the work behind the things we love. We hear both.
At CosplaySpa, our starting point is simple: you deserve to know what you’re looking at.
When you’re choosing a costume, wig or accessory, a product image isn’t just inspiration. You may use it to judge the color, shape, details and fit of something you’re considering buying. That’s why we don’t want an AI-generated mockup to be mistaken for a photograph of the actual product. If a product listing includes an AI-generated image, we’ll clearly identify it as a mockup.
Sometimes a new product hasn’t made it into the photo booth yet. In those cases, an AI-generated image can help show how it might look, but it must never silently stand in for photographic evidence. We review AI imagery used in product listings against the actual product and its fit, and we disclose its use. Our goal is for what arrives to live up to what you saw and understood when you ordered.
There’s a different place for imagination, too. From time to time, we use AI-created images or motion videos in advertisements and in parts of our website that are about mood and storytelling rather than showing a product for sale. We approach that work thoughtfully, with respect for the artists and designers who imagine these looks and the garment makers who bring them into the real world.
We don’t expect everyone to feel the same way about AI. What we can promise is to be open about its role, especially where it could affect a buying decision. Fantasy belongs in cosplay. Clarity belongs in shopping.
