A water-transfer temporary tattoo can bring a little extra detail to a costume. The steps are simple: prepare clean, dry skin, place the printed design against it, dampen the paper backing, then lift the backing once the design transfers. Always check the directions on your particular sheet first; the film, amount of water and holding time can vary.
Before you start: choose a comfortable spot
Choose clean, completely dry, intact skin. Avoid cuts, rashes, sunburn, freshly shaved or otherwise irritated areas, and keep the design away from your eyes, lips and other mucous membranes. Check the product’s age guidance before use, and use the transfer externally only. For a lower-abdomen accent, place it only on outer, intact skin.
Patch-test before a full look: try a small piece on a discreet area, following the sheet’s directions, and check for a reaction before using more. A patch test cannot rule out every reaction. If you know your skin reacts to cosmetics or similar products, review the product information first; when in doubt, skip it. Stop using the transfer if your skin stings, itches or becomes red or uncomfortable.
How to apply a water-transfer temporary tattoo
- Pick a spot you can reach easily. Check the design’s orientation; if your sheet allows it, cut around the motif you want to use.
- On clean, dry skin, remove the clear protective film if your product’s instructions specify one, then place the printed design face down against your skin. Keep the paper backing facing up.
- Press a damp cloth or sponge against the paper backing without shifting or rubbing the design. Follow the sheet’s directions for how wet and how long to hold it.
- Carefully lift a corner of the backing to check the transfer. If the design has not released, lay it back down and dampen again as directed. Once transferred, lift away the backing and let the design dry before getting dressed.

Wearing your transfer
Let the design dry before clothing brushes against it. Avoid rubbing the area or applying lotion over a freshly placed transfer. Costume straps, waistbands, sweat and frequent movement can affect how neatly a design stays in place, so choose a spot that won’t take constant friction. There is no single wear-time promise for every sheet, skin type or outfit. If your skin feels irritated, remove the transfer gently.
How to remove it gently
Follow the removal directions that came with your sheet. If none are provided, soften the transfer with warm water and mild soap, then wipe gently with a soft cloth. If it resists and your skin tolerates it, a small amount of oil suitable for use on your skin may help loosen remaining ink; wash the area afterward. Don’t scrape, scrub hard or use harsh solvents on your skin.
